Artist of the Month - Georgia Palmer

Grace Middleton

This month, we’re thrilled to feature Georgia Palmer as our Artist of the Month, a painter whose work celebrates the beauty of everyday life through vibrant florals and fruit-filled tablescapes. We asked Georgia some questions about her artistic journey, her sources of inspiration, and her favourite tools and techniques, all offering a glimpse into the vibrant, thoughtful world behind her work.

Q. Where have you found inspiration lately?

A. I have always found inspiration from food and flowers, tulips are back in season, which is such a joy, and is evident in my current paintings: the Tulips Series.

Q. Is there a piece of art or a project that you are particularly excited about right now?

A. I have just launched my website and am getting it ready for my first print drop for the Tulips Series, which is happening on 12 March, 7pm GMT.

Q. What kinds of tools or references do you like to use when creating artwork?

A. I like to have what I am painting in front of me, particularly if it is flowers or glassware because it really helps with capturing the form or light in the right way.

Q. What artists or artworks (from your life or art history) do you admire or consider influential to your work & why?

A. This may tie in with question 7. My grandparents were massively influential. One often painted still life in oils and dabbled in watercolour, the other always had a floral acrylic on the go, so it makes perfect sense that my work features elements of both, which is something I have only recently realised.

Q. What advice do you have for other new or aspiring artists?

A. Just start, honestly. Sometimes the thought of getting paints out and changing into clothes I don’t mind getting messy almost stops me from starting. When this happens, I reach for paint pens or a pencil and start mapping things out, and the rest follows. In terms of getting your work out there; start and instagram if you're not ready for a website, this can act as your portfolio of work and then approach small local galleries!

Q. Professionally, what has been your biggest achievement so far?

A. My biggest achievement so far has been my most recent exhibition with @artbelow x @adlibgallery. A poster of my Spritz on Blue piece features on a poster at Hyde Park Corner tube station until 4 March which is surreal, I also have 3 originals and 6 limited prints (printed by Grace) available from Ad Lib Gallery in Wimbledon until 8 March.

Q.What is your first memory of creating art?

A. My grandparents on my dad’s side were both skilled artists, so my earliest memories of creating are from being sat at their dining room table. My sister and I would sit for hours painting with watercolours or acrylics, even sewing sometimes.

Q. How do you spend your time when you’re not creating artwork?

A. I don’t paint full time, so when I’m not creating, I am working my 9-5, baking sweet treats, or running after mine and my husband’s cat, Billy, who thinks he’s a dog.

Q. What work do you most enjoy doing?

A. I most enjoy painting vibrant, illustrative tablescapes in acrylic, usually featuring florals and fruit, with some stripes or checks somewhere as well. I do love a pencil drawing though, I have drawn quite a few pubs and house, and I enjoy the level of detail needed for those as it’s quite different from my paintings.

Q. What is your dream project?

A. I think it would be cool to see my work on something other than canvas/paper. I would love to work on something like a bespoke label design for a bottle or candle maybe, or a print design for crockery, something like that sounds really fun.

Georgia shows how everyday moments can spark extraordinary creativity. Her Tulips Series will be available as prints in her upcoming drop on 12 March at 7 pm GMT, making it the perfect time to bring a piece of her colourful world into your own home.
