Artist of the Month - August

Calling All Creatives! Welcome to the August edition of our "Artist of the Month" blog series. This space is dedicated to celebrating the incredible talents we've had the pleasure of collaborating with, from breathtaking painters to visionary illustrators. Whether you're an artist yourself or simply a lover of art, you're in the right place. Let’s dive into the world of creativity and be inspired by the remarkable works of our featured artists.

This month, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Chloe Farrant, a mixed-media and muralist artist whose captivating creations span from vibrant murals to dynamic sculptures. We caught up with Chloe to learn more about her craft, inspirations, and what drives her artistic journey.

Q. Where have you found inspiration lately?

A. Recently, my inspiration has been drawn from the urban landscape—the streets, the nature I encounter in my daily life. I love waling with my dog and seeing all the natural wildlife .

Q. Is there a piece of art or a project that you are particularly excited about right now?

A. I’m excited to share that I’ll be painting the platform at Pinhoe train station, Exeter, in early September, celebrating the local wildlife and nature of the area. My goal is to brighten up the platform and bring a touch of art to the daily commute. Beyond that, I’m thrilled about a winter series of animals I’ve been working on, which will be released in October—just in time for Christmas!

Q. What kinds of tools or references do you like to use when creating artwork?

A. I often work from photographs I’ve taken, and whenever possible, I prefer to study animals from life, creating initial sketches before starting on a large canvas piece. I always incorporate some spray paint, which adds a spark of interest and vibrant colour. And for me, no piece feels complete without a touch of red oil stick.

 Q. What artists or artworks (from your life or art history) do you admire or consider influential to your work & why?

 A. One of my major influences is the artist Christian Hook, who creates masterful pieces that blend realism with the unexpected—like splatters of paint or neon accents that invite a spontaneous response from the viewer. Growing up, I was always drawn to the work of Klimt, and I can see how elements of his style, particularly his use of gold and abstraction, have influenced my own art.

Q. What advice do you have for other new or aspiring artists?

A. There’s so much advice I wish I’d received when starting my career. What I’ve learned, though, is that the best work comes from the heart. If you love something, paint it, create it, and do it every day. Don’t feel pressured to fit into a certain niche or paint what others expect—follow your passion and let that guide your art.

Q. Professionally, hat has been your biggest achievement so far?

A. I’m not sure there has been one particular project – I’ve always loved creating public art and street paintings. I’ve completed several public art commissions in and around Exeter, and nothing brings me more satisfaction than seeing people’s reactions and knowing my work has brought a bit of joy to their day.

Q. What is your first memory of creating art?

A. I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is from primary school, walking into class to find a table full of pre-prepared materials for making Christmas angels. I was so excited, captivated by the colourful papers and doilies. Now, when I run art workshops, I always aim to recreate that same sense of excitement and wonder for the children, just as I felt back then.

Q. How do you spend your time when you’re not creating artwork?

A. I love visiting art galleries and traveling for inspiration. I find a lot of creativity during walks with my dog in nature. I also enjoy working with people, getting involved in community projects, and supporting young artists as they learn new skills and techniques.

Q. What work do you most enjoy doing?

A. I create both paintings and sculptures using high-fire clays. While I enjoy the layering process in my paintings, sculpting is the most therapeutic medium for me. I completely lose myself in the process of shaping a form that feels like a living, breathing animal

Q. What is your dream project?

A. To travel across the world, perhaps on a safari, and study wildlife in its natural habitat for a series of work. I’d like to go to south Africa and just completely immerse myself in it i think that would be an incredible experience.
